What Shape Do You Think It Is?

Whew, I’m done…
An apple carving… Vil’s gonna have to be satisfied with quality like this.
I was worried when he told me he wanted to see one all of a sudden, but I think I carved this apple bird pretty well.

*Footsteps...*

 Sebek
Sebek

You Pomefiore student over there. Is the seat next to you free?
 Epel
Epel
Oh, you're Class D's... Sebek, right? Yeah, go ahead.
 Sebek
Sebek
Thank you. The cafeteria is so crowded during lunchtime; it's hard to find a seat.
...Hm?
WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT APPLE?!?!
 Epel
Epel
I-It's real startlin' when you yell outta the blue like that...!
 Sebek
Sebek
What a beautiful apple bird... It looks like it could just spread its wings and fly away from the plate right now!
 Epel
Epel
Yes, it's an apple carving.
 Sebek
Sebek
Oh? It's incredible. Absolutely something I'd want to offer the Young Master.
 Epel
Epel
The Young Master?
 Sebek
Sebek
The great dorm leader leading over our Diasomnia, Lord Malleus Draconia!
 Epel
Epel
Oh. The way you refer to him sounds like something out of a historical drama...
 Sebek
Sebek
Is that apple your dessert for after lunch?
 Epel
Epel
No, I'm not going to eat this. It's a carving I'm giving to Vil.
 Sebek
Sebek
I see, so it's for Pomefiore's dorm leader. That's a shame, but I understand...
Well, let's just find the chef and have him make another one!
 Epel
Epel
Chef? The one who carved this?
 Sebek
Sebek
Yes. Could you tell me who it was?
 Epel
Epel
Oh, that would be me...
 Sebek
Sebek
What?! You made this...?
 Epel
Epel
Vil asked me to make it for him.
I was telling him that my family sent some fruit from home, and he said he wanted to eat them in their most beautiful state.
 Sebek
Sebek
You must come from a noble background, if you're receiving such glistening fruits from home.
 Epel
Epel
U-Um, n-not really...
 Sebek
Sebek
You're Pomefiore's, er...
 Epel
Epel
I'm Epel. Epel Felmier.
 Sebek
Sebek
I see! Epel Felmier. Can you make anything else besides birds?
 Epel
Epel
I guess I can. Several others.
 Sebek
Sebek
Hm. Would you mind showing me some other carvings of yours?
 Epel
Epel
Is it 'cause you want to give one to your Young Master?
 Sebek
Sebek
Of course, that will always be my No.1 reason. But I genuinely just want to see.
It's a wonderful talent. I'm curious!
 Epel
Epel
...You are?
Okay, then how about this?
*Carve carve*
 Sebek
Sebek
Ooh. A rose! It's so detailed! Those thin layers you cut look just like actual petals!
 Epel
Epel
I can also do this...
*Carve carve carve*
 Sebek
Sebek
Is that...a castle? How magnificent! You even carved spires and windows into it!
 Epel
Epel
And this one's my specialty...
*Carve carve carve*
 Epel
Epel
What shape do you think it is?
 Sebek
Sebek
I-Is this... an apple?
 Epel
Epel
Hehe, wrong. It's not an ordinary apple. It's a poisoned apple.
 Sebek
Sebek
What?! Depicting an apple on an apple—that's so innovative!
Would you be so kind as to let me have this poisoned apple?
 Epel
Epel
Sure.
 Sebek
Sebek
Thank you!
I'm astonished that you have such a beautiful skill...
 Epel
Epel
Apples don't sell if they're bruised or if their stems are broken, even if they taste good.
So I tried to find ways through trial and error to make those apples look beautiful enough for people to eat, and finally settled with... apple carving.
I cut my fingers over and over again until I got good at it.
My family always smiled and said they could get by even if I couldn't do it, but I'd hate myself if I just gave up.
So when I finished the first carving I actually did well, I went around to show everyone in my village...
Ah... I started rambling about unimportant things... I guess.
 Sebek
Sebek
Not at all. I'm thoroughly impressed! Not just your skill, but that spirit of yours is admirable as well!
 Epel
Epel
...Thank you.
Next time they send me apples, I'll make another one for you... maybe.
