The Prefect (監督生 Kantoku-sei) is the protagonist. Their default name is Yuu (ユウ), but their name can be changed by the player.
The Prefect wakes up in one of the black coffins, having little memories of how they arrived at Night Raven College, along with having nothing to identify themselves with. They also do not possess any magic unlike the other students in Twisted Wonderland. The magic mirror remarks that the Prefect is "empty."
The Prefect is enrolled in Night Raven College with Grim as one student and lives in the Ramshackle Dorm.
The Prefect's gender is not directly stated in the game.
Their default name, Yuu, is a play on the word "you."
In episode 4, a cutscene will render the protagonist's name as "ユウ (You)" if the protagonist's name is left as the default. If the player changes the protagonist's name, the "(You)" will not display after their name.
Other characters remark that the Prefect can be quite cheeky and blunt.
The Prefect appears to come from an Earth-like world, given their dialogue options sometimes reference things like American football or traditional Japanese holidays.
They are the interviewer of NRC Campus News, and an example being the Birthday Special.
They own a device given by the headmaster called the "Ghost Camera," a camera that is able to take a picture of anything possessing a soul. According to the headmaster, the pictures taken by the Ghost Camera are able to "move" and were used by people in the old days before video existed.
Yuu is the only character to not make an appearance in the games first anniversary trailer. This is likely attributed to their status as a featureless protagonist. In their stead, the events that occurred throughout the year are shown to have taken place from Grim’s perspective.
In the official manga serialization, Yuuken Enma and Yuuka Hirasaka are introduced to fill the role of the Prefect in their stead.
In the official novel serialization, a character named Yuuya Kuroki was introduced to fill the role of the Prefect in their stead.
Yuuken is a tall young man with undercut short black hair and eyes. He wears his Hibari Municipal High School uniform, which consists of a teal green blazer, a white collared shirt with a loose navy blue tie, black and white plaid pants, and white sneakers. This uniform is also what he considers to be his best suit. He is considered large and burly by both his classmates and Crowley and he has visible muscles.
Yuuken is a responsible, caring, and determined young man. He has a habit of helping people no matter who they are, and is even willing to put himself in danger for it, as seen when he pushed Riddle out of the way of Grim's attacks. He wants to help people achieve their dreams, and people with a determination to get stronger remind him of his classmate Koito, who shares that determination. He's also very open, as one of his main concerns about Night Raven College was the fact that he was not magic, rather than the existence of magic itself. He was also unsurprised about the ghosts within Ramshackle and was even excited to be their roommate. He's good at bringing people together, as shown when he brought Ace and Deuce together to get the stone out of the mine, as well as when he personally gathered five students to join the kendo club. In addition to this, he seems to enjoy encouraging others, frequently giving out advice, or even creating a banner to support Ace and Deuce in a duel.
Yuuken is also very adaptable, finding the Ramshackle dorm charming, and quickly getting used to the idea of a magic world. This adaptability doesn't contradict his moral code though. Regardless of whether the person deserves it, Yuuken treats everyone with equal respect and care. He shows this when he defends Riddle after Ace and Deuce's duel, turning on the crowd that was heckling him instead of joining in. This moral code is supported by his strength, and he rarely shows fear in situations, such as when he didn't flinch when Leona was about to kick him.
Beyond this, Yuuken also enjoys things normal teenagers do, like anime, and has a sense of naivety to him.
Not much is known about his life before coming to Night Raven College, Yuuken was the vice-captain of his kendo club at his school in Tokyo and was considered the reason the club did not disband due to him gathering five new members on his own. It was due to this that they were able to attend their first official match in years, and he even helped his fellow club member Koito train late into the night to prepare for it. The carriage to NRC came to him while he was waiting for the bus that night.
Upon coming to NRC, Yuuken first enrolled as a handyman, and then half of a student (with Grim being the other half). He was placed in class 1-A, making him classmates with Ace and Deuce, and has Crewel as his homeroom teacher. Furthermore, his second period is with Trein, and his third is with Vargas. He was also given the Ghost Camera in order to supervise Grim and document his life at NRC without paperwork.

His given name "Yuuken" (雄 剣) contains the kanji for "hero/male" and "sword". While his last name; "Enma" comes from the Japanese name of Yama, king of Yomi (the "hell" in Shintoism), and one of the hells in Japanese Buddhism; being equivalent to Iama (Hindu Deity of death).
The manga confirms this version of Yuu as male.
So far, Yuuken is the only Yuu who does not wear Night Raven College uniform.
Yuuka is a young woman with short dark hair and light-colored eyes. She has a scar on her right forehead. When she was a member of the Judo club, she wore a white judo uniform.
After she is transferred to Night Raven College, she wears a standard school uniform with black leather gloves.
Yuuka appears to be an easygoing, caring, responsible, and sociable young woman. She gets along with her fellow judo members at her school. She appears to care about animals as she attempts to shield a stray cat from getting wet from the rain. She has a habit of working out. She is very confident about herself and her strength as she is willing to fight against Savanaclaw dorm members alone.
Not much about her life before coming to Night Raven College, Yuuka was a member of Judo club at her all-girls school in Tochigi. After her match, she saw a stray cat getting soaked in the rain. She attempts to keep the cat from getting wet, but it runs off. Suddenly, she gets run over by a black carriage and gets transported to Twisted Wonderland where she meets Grim and the other dorm leaders.
Powers and Abilities
Judo skills: As a Judo black belt, she appears to be very skilled at judo as she was able to flip her opponent.
Yuuka is the first protagonist to be female instead of male like Yuuken Enma from Episode of Heartslabyul, Yuuya from the light novel, and Yuu, whose gender isn’t referenced in the game.
Her given name "Yuuka" (悠河) contains the Kanjis for "distant" and "river", but its meaning is "fragrant" and "elegant". While her last name "Hirasaka" (比 良 坂) is based on the Japanese mythology, the Yomotsu Hirasaka, a slope or boundary between this world (where the living live), and the other world (where the dead live).
So far, Yuuka is the only Yuu to wear the male uniform despite being female.
