Now all we have to do is become the ghost bride's "ideal prince" and go propose to her.
This is our last chance to save Idia-senpai. Let's be the best grooms we can possibly be.

...I get what you're sayin' and all but I'm a little confused on exactly what kind of "prince" or "groom" we should be in the first place.

 Epel

Yeah, me too...

Fufufu. You all are as cute as bourgeons.

Bourgeon?

It means "bud". Puzzled by a woman's heart... how innocent it makes the two of you seem!

(...Was he making fun of us just now?)

(I don't think so. At least I didn't get the feeling he was... I guess?)
Rook-san's always going around and praising everyone like that.
|
 Ace

Really. Then maybe Rook-senpai here won't have any trouble persuading her.
By the way... How exactly do you plan to woo her over?
|
 Riddle

Ace... Surely you're not just planning on copying Rook-senpai's proposal.
|
 Ace
Ace

Of course not! I was just gonna see if I could use some of it as a reference is all.
|
 Rook

I thought I'd put my feelings into a poem and recite it to her.

A poem, huh. Yeah, I guess a princess dreaming of something romantic might like that, huh?
But seeing as I've never read any poems outside of class that might be kinda difficult.

In my case, too, I have no trouble when it comes to memorizing ones I've read but I've never attempted to write one myself.
I'm curious to see something you've written, Rook-senpai.
What kind of poem do you plan on giving the ghost bride?
|
 Rook
Rook

Let me see...
...I've got one! How about something like this.
Ready?

 Rook
Rook

June's flowers teach you of love
June's rain hides your tears
Yet come July you disappeared
And so in July I stood there in wait
You, a free little bird
Your gentle wings relentlessly flapping away

 Rook
Rook

I, but a foolish tree
My branches swaying with the warmth you left behind
Oh heaven above, I beg you not to release the sun!
And for this precious bird to remain by my side, using me as shelter from the rain

Well, I'm definitely not gonna be able to use any of that...

 Rook

Oya, is that so? Perhaps it still needs some work.
I know. I'll just have to come up with something more beautiful before the main event!
|
 Ace
Ace

That's not what I meant!
I just don't think I could write some cheesy poem comparing them to a little bird is all!
|
 Epel
Epel
|
I couldn't either, no way. Just the thought of it is kinda embarrassing... I guess?
|
 Ace
Ace

That too.
Sorry, Rook-senpai. I know I put you on the spot like that but I don't think I'm ready to try coming up with one myself.
|
 Rook
Rook

Non, non! It's never too early or too late to try!
Poetry is about what you feel. Everybody has feelings.
And I believe it's very important to say how one feels.
You won't be able to convey your feelings of "très bien" or "je t'aime" to someone if you never speak them.
|
 Epel
Epel

I suppose you're right about expressing your feelings... But it's a little too much for someone shy like me... I guess?
|
 Rook
Rook

I see. In that case, let me recite one better suited for beginners!
Ready?

 Rook

If it weren't for you
I wouldn't be here
If it weren't for you
I wouldn't be able to envision my dreams
If it weren't for you
I don't know what I would do!

 Ace

Oh yeah, the verses in this one don't have any of those cringy words so it might be easier to work with!

 Rook

I'm glad that you're here
Our dear, dear Headmaster

THAT WAS FOR THE HEADMASTER?!

It wasn't something meant for the ghost bride?!

I thought it would be easier for the two of you if it were about someone you knew.

I-I don't know about that.
I do think it's important to show the headmaster some respect but...

Like Epel said, you sure do have something nice to say about everyone, Rook-senpai.
...Don't you think it comes off as sounding kinda fake though?
Being complimented by someone who compliments everyone doesn't really make anyone feel good, or like...
It hurts your credibility.
|
 Rook
Rook
|
It makes me sad that you would doubt me like that. After all, I'm always saying how I truly feel!
It's because this world is full of so many beautiful things.
And I love all of them equally.
|
Translator's note: I took a few liberties with the phrasing of Rook's poems in order to keep the general meaning/feel in tact. A big thank you to Yuki who let me bounce different ways to word some of the verses in the second one off of her and for offering her own helpful suggestions!
|
Cultural note: While I'm not pretending I have a clue what Rook meant by the first poem or who it was about, for the sake of context June is both the wedding season and rainy season in Japan. The rainy season often extends until mid-July, so in my mind I imagine a season of long rain with short periods of sun and Rook longing for the season not to end so his little bird won’t fly away again... Of course it's probably meant to be read as more of a metaphor.
